I'm told that Netflix is now streaming The Borgias (the version with Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia/Pope Alexander). Though it's not without flaws, it was one of my favorite shows of the last few years and I'm still kind of crushed about its cancellation.

Visually, it's absolutely gorgeous in every way - sets, costumes, horses, stars (especially Lucrezia, who a bunch of you will recognize as one of the villains from season 1 Merlin, and Cesare, who was new to me but may be familiar to fans of French Canadian and/or LGBT cinema thanks to his role in J'ai Tue Ma Mere, among others), etc.

Despite Renaissance Italy being quite the man's world, it's also got a healthy share of strong and intelligent female characters, especially once Lucrezia starts coming into her own and Caterina Sforza takes over from the King of France as the Borgias' primary antagonist.

Fandom-wise, the main ship is Cesare/Lucrezia, but Cesare/Micheletto is also popular (and Micheletto is canonically gay).

Apparently JK Rowling just confessed that she regrets making Ron/Hermione endgame and thinks Hermione would have been happier with Harry.

I must respectfully disagree, but boy that brings back some fun memories!

Fellow Austen fans, have you seen these plans for a possible Austen-based MMORPG?

Found a copy of Les Grandes Chaleurs (Heat Wave) and watched it with J. last night. I admit, my original interest was almost entirely due to the .gifs of the shower scene that are all over the Borgias fandom (Francois Arnaud, who plays Cesare in The Borgias, is the May in the film's May-December romance), but it was actually pretty charming and had a good script. It reminded me of another May-December favorite of mine, Reckless, except much shorter!

Late to the party, as usual

So, it turns out that my favorite cousin is really into The Avengers, and in the interest of having something to talk about with her (despite the fact that she is my favorite cousin, I really don't know her that well, because she is 17 years younger than I am and I don't see her that often, but she just got a Facebook and this is making it much easier to know what's going on in her life, rather than hearing it thirdhand from my mom six months after the fact), I finally sat down and watched it. And Thor. So that happened.

As I've mentioned before, I'm not really into either comics (I have trouble reading them - too visually busy or something) or superhero movies, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The Joss helped, and I liked the way their personalities all bounced off each other. So, yay! I am happy that I finally get what you all are talking about, though I still have no idea who this Bucky person that everybody ships with Captain America is. I knew that Tony was Iron Man and Bruce was Hulk and Natasha had to be Black Widow but I thought maybe Bucky was Hawkeye and it turns out that he's actually Clint. I think? Anyway. My favorites were Hawkeye and Black Widow, but somewhat to my surprise I liked Bruce a lot, too. I've always heard the Hulk movies were terrible, but the character seems to work better as part of a group, or maybe Ruffalo just played him better than the others? No idea, but whichever it was, it was good.

I was slightly disappointed to discover that Thor didn't speak in old English nearly as much as I'd been led to expect, but otherwise it was worth the wait. :)

Just found out that Showtime cancelled The Borgias. It's been one of my favorite shows for the last few years - depending on what plotlines are dominating at the time, I look forward to it even more than Game of Thrones sometimes - and to make it worse, the season finale that just became the series finale left all sorts of plotlines unresolved and hanging. Micheletto, Giulia, della Rovere, Federigo, heck, even Cesare and Lucrezia themselves.

ONTD seems to think that Showtime was willing to renew it for another season but Neil Jordan just got sick of writing it, which - if true - makes the whole thing yet worse. They really couldn't find somebody else to take over?

Crap. :(

So, apparently Amazon is now allowing writers to sell fanfic in certain worlds (currently The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, and Pretty Little Liars) for money? I'm not inherently opposed to the idea (I sometimes read tie-in novels and they haven't ruined fandom by any means) but Scalzi has a good post up about some rather iffy stuff in the terms and conditions:

It sounds kind of like they just want to get tie-in novels (and/or ideas to write into the shows) without having to pay the rates for pro writers, which definitely sucks for pros and isn't great for the fan authors either.

The "no porn" requirement is also kind of hilarious. I wonder if they'll accept slash? Or non-explicit threesomes? If there was ever a show that needed its characters to just stop angsting and admit that they're all polyamorous, it's TVD. :P

So, are y'all coming back now?

Yahoo just bought Tumblr, and since it's pretty safe to assume they'll ruin it based on the fates of Delicious, Flickr, Astrid (probably), etc., does that mean fandom will be moving back to LJ/DW? Or do we have our sights set on some other service?

Personally, I've become a big fan of Pinterest, but since it doesn't allow porn, it doesn't seem like a good fit for fandom. Plus it doesn't do text in any significant way and video is limited to a few sites.

My blood starts simmering ominously at the merest mention of 50 Shades of Gray, so I feel like I should do my small part to get a much better piece of fannish writing noticed. Despite bumping into multiple recommendations from people with good taste around fandom, I've been avoiding reading Captive Prince, because let's face it, the plot summary does not sound like my cup of tea AT ALL. But I haven't been sleeping well and wanted to vegetate yesterday, so I downloaded it on my Kindle and ended up devouring both books in less than 24 hours.

The first two books are available free online, but if you have $8 to spare, let's move this baby up the bestseller lists. :)
